This is completely unacceptable to me. I was brought up in a car family, and was going to swap meets and car shows from an early age. I learned real quick I could look, and say anything, ask any question, or make any comment. But I was taught to keep my hands linked behind my back so there was no possible way I could touch anything. I still do this to this day.
We were at the 24 hours of Daytona the year Patrick Dempsey had his Lola P2 car in the race. It was on the grid with all the other cars so the spectators could see it. When they went to start it for the race, it wouldn't start. Some spectator had turned the electrical cutoff switch off. They almost didn't make the race because of it.
I am always happy to let young kids sit in our 914s when we have them at shows. Gotta get them hooked young so the 914 doesn't die.

But I am always standing there and give permission. If the kid is touching the car without permission, I will not let them sit in it.
When I'm in another's shop my hands are linked behind my back as well.
It is the ONLY time I ever do this.
It reminds me to resist the URGE!
I've found the phrase "May I?" works KICK ASS when I really want to touch something.
I've run a "wallet vampire" (Tool salesmen) clean ass out of the shop because they couldn't resist touching a big block Cobra replica (the one on my website).
This car had a 50K inlaid paint job (Stupid!) and my customer was "particular".
I was a thermo-nuclear WOLF!
Hopefully I cured him of his proclivities!
