You have to be careful doing it this way...the first time I tried to remove the filter with various wrenches failed and I tried this...only to fail and have a car with no oil and a stuck filter. I ended up getting one of those removal tools that has a chain and it compressed the busted filter quite a bit. I had to wrap it around as close to where it attached to the engine and cursed up a storm to get it off. Ironically, my daughter did the same thing when she overtightened her filter and she used a screwdriver without talking to me first). In my defense, the prior owner also was unable to remove the filter so it wasn't me that tightened it.
