A long-dormant 74 D-Jet 2.0 died after driving 100 feet, and when I tried to restart it, the starter motor didn't do anything. Not even a click from the solenoid. Had to tow it back into the yard. After waiting 30 minutes, the starter engaged and the car started and ran fine for another 3 minutes, then died again. I don't get it. Maybe a loose ground? Heat soaked electronics?

By the way, I just replaced the fuel pump. The car also has a high idle after startup. 2-3k rpm.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a couple of issues. Any of this occur before the fuel pump?

What is the fuel pressure now?

As far as the starter, check your grounds but this could be a misbehaving seat belt cut out. I never remember when they started putting those in. Has yours been bypassed? I doubt soak could be a thing after 100 feet but check the voltage reaching the solenoid when trying to start.

Simple troubleshooting check: When it's warm and won't turn over, use a screwdriver to jump between the solenoid terminal and the big wire. This will isolate if the problem is with the starter (won't turn over) or the starting circuit (does turn over).

Put it in neutral, of course, and it would be good to have someone inside on the brake pedal.

If it's with the starting circuit, common issues are (as noted) the seat belt cut out circuit (bypass it), a bad ignition switch (replace it), and/or need for the commonly-installed "hot start" relay (which I encourage, regardless).

Somewhere here there's a thread on using a Ford starter solenoid, I'm drawing a blank on where it is...
