One of my son's has gotten into 3D printing.

I'd like for him to print new speaker grills for my 914 as both of mine are damaged.

Anyone know of a 3D print template for the grills? Or a CAD drawing of them?

TIA,

GN

Given that repros are available for about $200 for a pair and the size and complexity of the parts, I'm not sure it would be worth it to try and 3D print them...

A grille (or program) that used a more standard sized (6 x 9, 6 x 8, 6.5") speaker would be awesome.

914Rubber offers vacuum-formed housings that can fit a 6.5" speaker. Personally I really did not like them, neither for the form nor the finish - but that's just my own personal taste.

In the end I found that a pair of decent 4"x6" speakers in the factory housings combined with a subwoofer located somewhere (mine is hidden in the center console) to be an excellent solution and looks completely stock.

Nope. But developing the skills of a taking dimensions and reverse engineering parts is going to be critical if he wants to do anything practical with printers.

If he doesn't have digital calipers, get him some, then hand him an existing grill and ask him to reproduce it.

I'm about to wrap up a reverse engineering 3D printed part for an NLA tail light divider panel for @retroracer Tony. Still a couple edits to go but I can confirm these sorts of projects are totally doable.

Doable, yes, of course. Worth it? Given replacements are available it's not - IMHO...

The part is about 10-11" square when viewed perpendicular to the speaker grill plane. Possibly just bigger than a common 10" square (250 x 250 mm) 3D printer size. Even if you have a printer big enough to print it all in one piece, given the part geometry, there will be lots of support material required plus post-printing cleanup and painting. Or you have to print multiple smaller parts and try and assemble them accurately.

Not to mention the CAD work involved in measuring/scannning the part and modeling it accurately in 3D. I would not call this a beginner's exercise.

If you're passionate about the process and willing to invest the time and effort, go for it. If you just want some original repro speaker grilles - buy them.

Ditto to your 2nd sentence. Cost to me of 3D printing is minimal.

Thanks for links.
