Thinking about replacing my stock horns with something like these (Hella T24):
https://www.amazon.de/HELLA-Frequenzbereich...urce=1&th=1 Various sites seem to indicate they will (physically) fit… They pull 72W each! So 12A total. The horn fuse is 16A, but it also runs the two 55W accessory driving lights in the bumper, which in my Euro spec car go on with the high beams. So imagine driving with the high beams on and having to honk… Only momentary, but that’s like a 21-22A draw thru that fuse. I guess in order to avoid this possibility, I am going to need an additional fuse and relay… Hmmm. |

I want to run trumpet horns.
I have vintage ones that have three trumpets and a pump so packaging is a real issue. In the past it was possible to have them play various tunes. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Attached thumbnail(s) |

Check Hella Supertones - depending on your reasons for replacing what you have.

I have the high and low air horn. Each mounted behind the turn signal buckets.
They really get other drivers attention |

Mostly I was interested in knowing if these things will actually fit in the same place as the OEM pancake horns - they being considerably thicker and the space behind the bumper being pretty limited.

I installed 96-97 VW Golf/Jetta high and low tone horns in my 914 in the stock two horn configuration locations. I used the factory female plugs from the golf/jetta and put spade connectors on the ends of the pigtail ends to connect to the factory locations in the 914 harness and the factory golf/jetta metal brackets. They sound amazing too. |

So I finally installed a set of Hella Twin Tone horns. They do fit in the space but there was a bit of work to do. The instructions that came with them said to absolutely not touch the nut that mounts the bracket to the horn or the sound might be affected. So I carefully bent the brackets and made standoffs to re-orient the horn so it would fit behind the grille.
They definitely sound great - no longer a "beep" and much more like a "honk". Still does not quite rival the horns on my '57 T-Bird - one thing I can say about her is she has great honkers! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) I don't know what the original horns for a 914 were like - the ones I took off the car look too new to be original - and they are both the same tone. |

@chmillman
You could swap the headlights to LED and reduce the draw on the circuit. If you add a relay the load still have to be drawn from some circuit. |

Yep, thought about putting in Spoke’s LED conversions in my driving lights. Not street legal here though, so when inspection time comes I would have to change them back. Plus they are listed as 5700K, which would be a telltale sign for anyone that they have been changed, and ruins the ‘70’s warm halogen light aesthetic for me. Too bad there isn’t a 3700K version available for those. I’m going without an extra relay currently, will test at some point with the brights on and honk the horn a bit to see if a fuse blows. If so, I thought about running a second wire from battery + and fused for 15A just for the horns. I also have a set of yellow Sharptones coming - won’t sound quite as nice, but only draw 44W each and are disc style, so they would fit right in. |

@chmillman
Do the Hella horns that you installed have the "Euro" trumpet sound like the early 911 trumpets and many Italian cars? |

I wanted the loudest horns that would fit the stock location on my '75 chassis. The flat Hellas with the red fronts seen in the ad above proved to be only average. Actually no more threatning than original 914 horns |

Do the Hella horns that you installed have the "Euro" trumpet sound like the early 911 trumpets and many Italian cars? I don't know what early 911 horns sounded like but for me classic Italian horns were "Fiamm" horns - actual straight trumpet air horns, quite a bit higher pitched. No real space for those in the 914 stock location. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk2Jl5VJ87k I wanted the loudest horns that would fit the stock location on my '75 chassis. The flat Hellas with the red fronts seen in the ad above proved to be only average. Actually no more threatning than original 914 horns I agree they are not louder than the originals. All I wanted was a nicer sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAe9qvC49qY |

I put them on pretty early in my ownership, it was my daily driver
They fit and are really loud. Mine are older and black but look the same. |

Went to look in my tool box for the other two horns I acquired from the local Pick and Pull to have as backups as I purchased them used at the same time. Found them. The part numbers are 1HM951219D 400Hz (low tone. mounts to passenger side) 12V(volt) and 1HM951219K 500Hz (high tone. mounts to driver side (same mounting locations for the high/low tone horns as the stock dual horn optioned 914s) 12V(volt). I do not know the part numbers for the female weatherpack type connectors (pig tail) that connect to the horn assemblies. I removed both horns and cut the wiring out of the harnesses from two different VW Golfs/Jettas. |
