This is my first post on this forum, so forgive me if the issue has been covered before. I couldn't find it using the "search" feature. Probably common knowledge in the 914 community. Recently purchased a decent 1975 1.8 here on Hawaii island. There have been a number of small issues that I've had to deal with, but this one has me stumped. The turn signals only operate when the parking brake is engaged. Any ideas?

The 914 uses the flasher relay to flash the brake warning light when the ebrake is active.

Couple of questions:

With the ebrake active and brake warning light flashing, do the exterior turnsignal bulbs flash too?

Do the exterior turnsignal bulbs flash when the 4way or hazard switch is pulled?

Do the correct left or right exterior turnsignal bulbs flash when the car is running and the turnsignal stalk is left or right?

I had weird things happening with my turn signal and culprit was wrong bulb. I had a single filament where I should have had a dual filament.

Probably not the solution, but easy check.

When I had a somewhat similar problem it turned out the TS switch had some sort of short and caused anomalies in the turn signal lights. Took a long time to narrow it down to the switch.
The TS switch is easy to test on the bench.

Thank you for the prompt replies!
Answers to Spoke's questions:
Yes, the exterior turn signals operate but not in unison with the ebrake light. Only as directed by the turn signal switch.
Yes, the 4-way light work normally at all times.
With the car running or not, the turn signals work only when the parking brake is operated (the switch on the brake handle operated).

there is one additional symptom that I forgot to mention. When the parking brake is operated, there is a loud buzzing coming from under the dash, possibly from the flasher relay, which I believe is on the back of the fuse panel.

Where'd you get the car? I don't think Gunner sold any of his. Was this from Punawele St.? I know there was a copper 75 living there with at least one parts car.

Sounds like a wiring or grounding issue.

Do you have any manuals for the car? Wiring diagrams would be very good to have.

Jeff Bowlsby's Tech Notebook page has labeled drawings of the turn signal buckets showing what wire goes where. That's a good place to start.
