I need to replace my 15-20 year old 914 tires & looking for suggestions.
My 1974 914 tires has only about 1K+ - miles on them and in perfect condition, but needs replacement for safety.
My tires are currently all-season 205x60xR15 with no fender clearance issues front or rear. I don't do track events, just local summer cruising to cars/coffee & PCA activities with our 914 locals.
Need suggestions for summer only tires since it's a garage queen.
I like the following size based on manufacture availability for 914's.
205x55x15 looks good?
205x60x15 does not look available?
195x60x15 looks good on 914 factory recommendations.
I know it's a difficult choice on this forum & looking for expert 914 suggestions.

I like the 195s best; same use pattern as you.
Continentals readily available at reasonable price. Get one with a bit of rounded tread edge though, otherwise some inside wheel well rubbing on sharp turning. Had two sets of Michelins but both experienced sidewall cracking after only 2-3 years. Keep them cleaned and treated; remove small stones from the treads. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Coopers are working really good for me
Reasonably priced and very firm " reinforced sidewall "

195/65/15 for the Creamsicle. Don't laugh but this tire is a good also season H rated tire with 85,000 range. Price is great. They KILL YOU on installation and balance for half the price of the tire. $22+ $3 disposal.

I replaced old Michelins last year with Vredestein Hightrac All Season 205x65x15, and they have been excellent road tires. Available from Tire Rack, reasonable cost, mounted on original steelie 5 1/2"x15" without any fender modifications, but 12mm spacers in front to eliminate inner rub at full lock. I have been very happy with Sumitomo HTR A/S P03, in 195/65-15. Tire rack calls it "ultra high performance all season", which might be a contradiction. Anyway, it has plenty of grip in cornering and braking, is quiet, and has not worn out yet. And from my calculations 195/65-15 is close to the original stock tire diameter. Current price of $105 is a relative bargain.

Tire size suggestions and feedback for 5x5.5 914 steelies and Rivieras would be appreciated.

I have 1 set of each.

Tire guys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

My old (205-60-15) tires looked perfect with about 2K miles when installed about 20+ years ago.

Yesterday I installed (4) new 195-65-15 tires that improved ride quality with improved handling (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) This was long overdue and cheap life insurance due to old tire safety driving issues.

Had a great time looking at the 914 on the auto rack to view & take photos of (20-year) old dust & grime on my 2k driven miles. I know (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chair.gif)

Here is a cheap idea for new 914ers taking off and replace hub caps with no damages, 2" PVC tubes for less than $10 bucks at Home Depot (photos) that fit hub caps perfectly.

Tom

If it is just for cruising and show, check out Vredestein Sprint Classic

Decent price, vintage pattern, modern compounds, and sizes with proper sidewall height for a 914. This tire exists for old Porsches/VWs

I wouldn't go over a 185 on 4 bolt Fuchs

Running Michelin Primacy 4’s in 195/65 15 on mine. They almost always come out on top in tire reviews here (along with the Conti’s) for both wet and dry handling and braking and are reasonably priced as compared to some of the “classic” tires. But I have 7” 5-bolt Fuchs on mine. If I had 5.5” rims, not sure if I wouldn’t go with 185/70’s instead. But the choices in that size are very limited and they’re all pretty expensive.

I have been using that exact same home made tool for more than 20 years now.

Hey guys,

I do have 205/60R15 Kleber Dynaxer HP4 tyres on 7" wheels with 16 offset.
No need to do some bodywork with this setup.

Third picture is with the 205s on serial rims.

Best regards
Chris

The Dynaxers are also available in 185/70 and 195/65… Kleber is now a sub-group of Michelin. The reviews say not too bad in the dry, a little less good in the wet.
