Hi All
I am in the process of restoring one of the Crayford RHD cars which was in a truly horrible condition.

Now that the shell is back from my favoured paint shop I've decided to start at the front refitting the wiring, lights etc but note that I can't find the aluminium vin tag from the right hand light box, question is , where abouts on this side of the pond can I buy a replacement? I know they are available via Johnny Law in US but I'd like to save a dollar or 2 finding a European supplier.

Or maybe I'll have to wait until I visit the LA Lit meet in February--I doubt if I'll have finished the car by then anyway.

Can you advise ??

Many thanks

Ian

your white car looked like it was in v g condition?

are you restoring a different one?
is it that green car that was for sale a few years back?
looked like it was ready to break in half ---un-saveable?

Hi , no not the white one, which is No1, nor the green one--don't know where that's gone, or whether it was a Crayford.
This is an orange one, No 7 in fact and was a worse state the the green one.

@9146-racer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

nice to know another one survives.
hard to imagine one in a worse state than the green one, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

there is a yellow one in the UK as well that managed to circumnavigate the world over half a century. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
i think its a 75. west australia ---->singapore------->uk.

i'm still on the look out for a white 73 thats down here.
i know its somewhere out there still.

2nd for Carbone, like it was stated, may need to email them, amazing quality, correct number stamping and the security circles, they actually sent me two, one silver and one black, both 10/10 quality. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

.. the aluminium vin tag from the right hand light box,

Did all year models have this tag at the headlight area, I thought it started in later productions?

almost the opposite is the case.

all year models up to end of 74 in all markets had the aluminium tag on the passenger side head light bucket housing,

for 75 this shifts to the firewall separating the front trunk from the fuel tank area.
(at least for USA market but i believe also for rest of the world).

and for 76 model which were exclusively USA market cars there was no aluminium plate at all.

the reasons were simple and to do with USA DOT requirements.
the USA legislated vin identification had to be in the form of a strictly specified tamper proof VIN sticker. the location of this was also strictly specified as inside of drivers door jambs. this requirement was unique to the USA and nowhere else in the worlld.
for the USA the vin sticker in the drivers door has the same legal status as the manufacturer's plate that applies in the rest of the world. not sure of the exact date the vin sticker was introduced in the USA but it is certainly before the 914 starts production in the second half of 1969. its sometime in the late 1960s that the vin sticker was standardised and introduced in the USA only.

the aluminium manufacturers plate in the front trunk used everywhere else in the world as the official chassis plate was irrelevant in the USA and had no status in officialdom.

s0.........when the 76 models were manufactured the aluminium manufacturers plate was entirely deleted from the cars since it served no purpose as recognised identification by USA vehicle registration authorities.

i suspect the manufacturers plate on the headlight bucket was moved in 75 due to the USA impact bumper laws. it was repositioned to a place where there was little risk of damage in a frontal collision? or....maybe the laws changed in germany where the manufacturers plate had to be positioned and thats the reason for its new position in 75?
certainly here in australia just about any car you car to look at stretching back over the last half century has its manufacturer plate in the engine bay on the firewall between the engine and the passenger compartment. could be the reason for the change in 75.
whatever the case the position of the plate had no meaning on USA market cars.
