I converted a 4 to 6 in a 71. I also have a short shifter and the necessary spacer installed. The shift rod in the tunnel is scraping a gusset and causing a loud squeaking when put in reverse or 1st and slightly less squeak sound going into 4th and 5th. I have a video taken in the tunnel showing how it's interfering with the shift rod. Has anyone else had this issue and have a solution other than drilling a hole with a hole saw on the top of the tunnel and grinding some of the gusset for clearance? Thanks

we all had to bend the shift rod.
Edit Re read Inside the tunnel is likely the seatbelt anchor |

Most common problem is a too long seatbelt bolt that interferes with the rod.

The tail shifter tunnel rod was suported by the rear and front bushing. In its function the rod was rotating on its axis and sliding back and forth (no lateral movement).
The side shiter tunnel rod actually moves left and right at the shifter and pivots in the rear bushing (like a spherical bushing). To allow this left and right motion, the tunnel partial bulkhead through which the rod goes through was enlarged in 73 to allow its lateral movement. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to access that bulkhead to elarge it on the 70-72 cars. I guess the rod bending trick is the easiest solution. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

All I had to do was loosen the shifter base and move it a tiny bit. It is probably rubbing on a sheet metal support in the tunnel.

If I'm not mistaken, the short shifter kit exacerbates the rubbing issue. The spacer is smaller than the length added to the shift lever, which means the rod still sits lower in the tunnel at the front, compared with the stock shifter. Not only that, the distance that the coupler swings left and right is increased by the short shift increased lever arm.

Tail shift transmissions being replaced with side shiFFter transmissions are a common thing - never heard of any tunnel interference (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) . Is this issue only because a short shifter kit is installed? Anyone experiencing this without the kit?
Mine (a '72 w/ side shift) takes a little more effort to get into 1/R than I remember but I was thinking it's because every shift bushing has been replaced. Think I'll see if sliding the top plate over slightly, as suggested, will improve it. |

Straight one is the factory one.
The early aluminum engine cases stuck further down than the he later mag cases. |

Here is some info on what the geometry in the tunnel looks like, and what the side shift conversion looks like. I fixed my issue when the floor pans were off, but that might be a bit extreme.
