I did the usual 5 lug conversion, buying 911 struts, with shocks, from a 911 guy who said the struts and shocks were from a 911 T. I changed nothing but the struts and shocks. The ride was harsher than I wanted so I figured I would take the 914 shocks out of the 914 struts and put the 914 shocks in the 911 struts. The 914 shocks, on the right, do not fit in the 911 struts. The 911 shocks are on the left. As you can see, the ends of the shocks is different. What is wrong with this picture? Any idea about the origin of the yellow shock? Attached Image

Looking at some photos online, it looks to be a 69-85 911 strut insert with BOGE front struts only.

There are three different brands of struts used on early 911’s

I have Boge 911 struts that I was running Bilstien inserts.
The bottom looked the same as the insert on the right.
I replaced them with Koni adjustable inserts that look like the one on the left.

It should be marked on the insert the brand. Both my Bilstien and Koni are yellow.

Why didn't they fit? Too long, or too short?

It looks like there is a little piece on top of the left insert, the Koni adjustable have that. See if it turns. Maybe you can change the setting.

Do you have Koni struts from the 911? If so, they only take knoni inserts. If they are koni, they are typically adjustable.

Boge struts are the only ones that can run boge and special koni or Bilstein designed for boge struts. I have run koni and Bilstein in my boge struts over the years.

What do your strut housings look like or brand? There are multiple types and only certain inserts fit certain strut housings. If it's Koni housing you need not only the correct strut insert but also a different gland nut to fit properly. I've gone through this recently thinking the 914 Koni insert would fit a 911 Koni housing but that's just not the case.

I just looked at PET. Bilstein is correct for that era 911 up to mid 70's. I have 86 Boge struts and 914 bilsteins fit (don't do this). The only difference is the top nut
