Has anyone used a 89-98 911 3.6L case as the foundation for a 914 flat 6 build?

Many 3.6L 914s around these days. Some of which have had their engines heavily modified.

@ClayPerrine opened up his to 4.0L, he might have some more insights.

Thanks for that. My reason for asking is that I am finding it very difficult to find a virgin (not rebuilt) and undamaged 3.0/3.2 case. There are a few new 3.6 cases still available. Are there any new 3.0/3.2 cases still around?

Yea, you can buy new 3.6 cases from Porsche. They are not currently selling 3.0 or 3.2 cases.

If you can, you are better off buying a complete core motor than trying to buy all the parts for an engine build individually. By the time you buy all the little nuts, bolts and screws, you spend way more money than you would if you just bought a used engine and rebuilt it.

Yes, 3.6 cases are available, but you have to have the crank, the rods the cylinders, the pistons, the heads, the cam carriers, the cam boxes the cams, the rocker arms, the intermediate shaft, the oil pump, the valve covers... the list goes on.

I got a relatively cheap 3.6 core that had an engine fire. Even then, I spent way too much getting all the fuel injection pieces to make it work.

Now I am selling all of that.

And with a 3.6, you have to alter the engine tin for it to fit. The 3.2 will fit with no alterations to the tin. I actually researched the idea of back dating the timing boxes on the 3.6 to use the 3.2 setup just so the engine tin would fit the front of the motor. And I looked at backdating the engine case to fit a engine mounted oil cooler too.

It was easier to fabricate engine tin to fit the 3.6.

I would suggest sitting down and making a pros and cons list of a 3.2 vs a 3.6 engine. Both are available out there used with all the fuel injection. And don't forget the 901 transmission is not really good with a 3.6 engine. Yes the 901 will work. But it is really not designed for the horsepower and torque of a 3.6.

You can check out my recent build thread. I just replaced my 3.2 with a 95 3.6. I’m also running a 916 trans. All the conversion parts came from Patrick Motorsports in AZ. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...=2&t=369082

Thanks to all for this information.

Is there anyone that you know of that has a 3.0 or 3.2 case or complete engine for sale?

As an alternative, I have researched Jake Raby Type 4’s and Renegade Hybrids V8 conversions.

You should also look at Subaru conversions.

I'm not a lover of Subi but those are the most logical upgrade IMO.

Both big 6 and turbo versions are doable, and a super simple NA 4 will make a quick dependable 914...

Another possibility is the Honda K series.
A recent thread regarding this: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=372943

A k20 will be nearly 1" shorter than that K24 and with a turbo, 500 hp is not that hard to hit.
That thread shows commercially available transmission adaption to stick a Honda K on a Boxster transmission.

Engine to trans adaption is the HARDEST thing to overcome when sticking one OEM onto another.

I'd like to install a 3.6l onto a Boxster 6 speed. Mine would be a GM LGX (huge torque curve/plateau?).

Nobody makes adaption and that makes my idea MUCH more difficult.

If you're not stuck on a Porsche engine the Germans tend to re-use things like bell housing patterns and there is a whole SLEW of German (Audi/VW/Bentley) stuff that will bolt up. Even the twin turbo W12 Bentley has a chance...

Best guy to ask about this is Clay Perrine.

Tygaboy cheated!

He used a Ferrari transmission as well...

So, no bull shit adaption!

It was interesting how the Porsche CVs simple bolted up to the Ferrari flanges!
