As I get to know and love this 914 I bought back in July. I was looking around underneath yesterday and noticed an oil drip around a part I don't really know what it is??

Sorry just not that familiar with these cars thought maybe some of you could tell me a bit about what I'm looking at and where oil might be coming from..

I think its either a transmission breather or some kind of external filter??

Before I remove that clamp and look at what's there thought I might ask here first..

The oil seems to be coming from above it..Attached Image

That’s just the cover for the shift console.
Hard to tell from that pick where the oil is coming from. Prob a mix of oil and tranny fluid.

Shift console. Two places it may leak. Where the shift shaft goes through the console and where it attaches to the transmission.

Good day,

Had a leak there as well. Replaced the shaft seal and the rubber ring. Take it apart and you will see.

note : a friend of mine had a leak coming from one of the studs. He took the stud out and re-installed with some sealer.

btw, the black crud is some kind of protection the factory applied to the transmission. It's some kind of tar that I painstakingly removed by chipping it away. I thought it was hardened grease but nope..

good luck

assuming it's a minor leak, you might consider leaving it. keep your eye on the trans oil level.

It's not a huge job to repair if you decide to get it fixed.

Transaxle oil is pretty pungent and has a very distinct smell. Your nose can tell you whether or not this is from the transmission or the engine.

Hadn’t thought about that but you are absolutely right. Looks like a relatively small oil discharge compared to many that I have caused, er hmmm I mean have seen.

Remove clamp from cover
Pull cover off (it does not come off, just turn it and empty it out
Clean it out
Put it back
Monitor it in 6 months
