I am ready to install my new engine and looking for thoughts on the firewall insulation pads as I would like the look of stock, though also the insulation of heat and sound coming from the engine compartment
I have sort of narrowed it down to 2, one is the one offered by 914Rubber (always great products) and one from AA, has any one experience with ether or other Ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks wes

Lots of folks don't replace the engine compartment pad. My firewall is painted silver and reflects more light than a black pad would. Makes it a bit easier to see in there.

I had to fix some rust that happened behind it, so I figured it was a dirt and water catcher. I used B-Quiet, Jute, then the back pad on the inside. Quiet enough.

Not a good picture, but the only one I could find with any view of my firewall.

Unless you are going full concourse, I would forego the rust starter....err...I mean firewall engine pad.

I had thought about using second skin, go's on like dynamite and is foil faced facing engine compartment but I believe that would reflect the heat right back at the engine and as the new engine is a bit hoped up it just might be more of a issue with heat though not relay sure.

I have Mark's (914Rubber) backpad. It is silver reflective, good fit, easy to install. I used velcro as Mark suggests so it would be easy to remove to check if you have a rust concern. As a matter of personal preference I wouldn't buy anything from AA (I'm old and don't need the aggravation).

The one mark has on 914rubber now is black more like OEM, I see the foil one and did you note any deference in eng temp.
And I agree on AA!

I have the silver and the OEM style both. They are good, but honestly the car I'm working on now I will be leaving without, I may add in the future, but I want to see how much difference these really do make. They can be added with the engine in, however I would remove the battery to fit it in better.

From what I’ve come to understand about sound, it makes more sense to stop it from reflecting off of all of those live engine compartment surfaces in the first place. Instead of trying to mute the sound after it has come through firewall, which is what Dynamat etc does.

And as long as the car is garage kept, and a little care is exercised during washings I don’t know that the back pad and rust are that big of a concern. It’s not like many 914 owners outside of the PNW let their cars see rainy days.

You can have it coated in LineX liner like I did. Hopefully some day soon I'll be able to tell you if it's any quieter. Looks good anyways.

I probably wouldn't use anything that could trap water and not be easily removed. The spray on liner is a good alternative, but if sound is the issue the Dynamat on the inside of the cockpit would not be as effective.

I bought this one from 914rubber a few years back as part of a group buy. I really like it. It has a "stockish" look and won't hold water. I was able to use the stock mounting system with some supplemental Velcro to hold it in place.

This, combined with rattle trap on the inside of the firewall provide a reasonably quiet cabin for my daily driver:

I had an extra original pad from the interior,. I trimmed it to fit and glued it to the engine side of the fire wall. I did paint it as well with the zolotone I sprayed engine compartment with.

I have a hard time running that thru one ear and out the other so let me get this str8. If I have an "18ga metal wall and I laminate it with an 1/8"nom. rubberized wall, then create "X" decibles of sound on side A then repeat that on side B, I will find that the noise levels emitted on each side are NOT equal??

I believe the B-quiet, and dynomat people will say it is the vibrations of the material that allows the sound to "pass thru". That is why you just sick 12" x 12" piece on the trunk lid, or the inner skin of the door. It absorbs the vibrations.

Teeners: This is an old thread but I'm curious what the 2026! thinking is. I'm going to pull the engine on our BB this winter, and want to replace the firewall pad that I believe is the original. One of the main reasons to pull the motor is to detail the engine compartment as best I can to put it back to OEM. The car had dealer installed AC, which I have mostly removed. The AC install involved hacking up the tins, and reinstalling the ECU on the firewall, which required cutting the pad.
I'm striving for originality, so I'm wondering what is best now, in the post supplier consolidation, tariff era. Any thoughts and opinions are welcome.
Thnaks,
Rob

AutoAtlanta has them:

Didn't see them currently on 914rubber, they might though, did in the past...
